The VA Aid and Attendance benefit is one of the most valuable — and most underutilized — financial resources available to help pay for senior care. Eligible wartime veterans and their surviving spouses can receive monthly payments to help cover the cost of assisted living, memory care, or in-home care. Yet most families only learn about it after they've already exhausted other options.
Benefit amounts are updated annually. As of 2025, the maximum monthly Aid and Attendance benefit is approximately $2,300 for a veteran, $1,478 for a surviving spouse, and $2,727 for a couple. These amounts are paid directly to the beneficiary and can be used to offset the cost of care in any licensed senior living setting.
To qualify for Aid and Attendance, a veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a wartime period (including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War era). The veteran must have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
Additionally, the applicant must meet medical criteria — needing assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, or eating — and financial criteria related to income and assets. Surviving spouses of eligible veterans may also qualify even if they never served themselves.
Applications are submitted to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The process involves gathering discharge documentation (DD-214), medical evidence of care needs, and financial information. The application can be complex and time-consuming, and errors or missing documentation are common causes of delay.
Working with a VA-accredited claims agent or Veterans Service Organization (VSO) at no cost can significantly improve both the quality of the application and processing time. Major VSOs include the American Legion, VFW, DAV, and AMVETS.
