My mom spent two years in this facility and almost everyday was a battle for her proper and deserved care. I don't fault the hard working Care Givers and Medtechs as I got to know each and everyone, I learned how hard but rewarding this job can be. The hard part of the job comes from how these facilities are managed for profit over proper care. Never meet with the ED in person, email all concerns to help with a State investigation. Keep these references for Ombudsman Long Term Care and State Licensing and Compliance.

If you have other options, do not placed your loved within the Memory Care unit. We removed my father as soon as possible after he experienced a drastic change in condition days after being admitted. Brookdale could not provide the staffing levels to provide him the care he needed. He was not bathed or groomed and my family had to step in and provide 24/7 1:1 care for him until we informed the Long-Term Care Ombudsman and got licensing involved. This facility cannot provide a safe level of staffing or the bare minimum support for ADLs required by the state. If this is your only option, you must consistently be an advocate for your loved one. Get every decision from them in writing, including changes in care plan. You should receive advance notice of this change in care plan. We did not. Involve the Long-Term Care Ombudsman if they are causing harm and placing your loved one at risk.

My mother and father have both resided together at Brookdale Geary Street Memory Care since November of 2023. Mom and Dad have always been happy there. There are several nice common areas for gathering, sitting and a great activities room. Brookdale has a nice open and cheerful dining room and my parents never complained about the food. Recently dad passed away and my wife and I traveled to Albany and stayed for two weeks. As we spent hours every day to be with mom, we got a comprehensive view of how well Brookdale is being managed at this time. The leadership is directly involved, nursing care was present and available when needed and the caregivers were well trained and very attentive to the resident’s needs. This line of work is not for the faint of heart, but we witnessed a beyond the call level of love and compassion, not only for my mom in her grief, but with all the residents who are in varying stages of dementia. I could not ask for a better team of professionals to care for my mom. In fairness, there were some short staffing issues awhile back, but the leadership was transparent about this and they were committed to correcting the problem. During this 2 week visit we observed a harmonious team of people who know how to care for these special residents, and they are happy with their work. I certainly would recommend Brookdale Geary Street to anyone in need of memory care for loved ones.

Value Consideration
With monthly costs starting above the local average, families should weigh the community’s amenities and activity offerings against occasional gaps in care delivery. The higher price reflects services like 24/7 staffing, meals, and social programs, but some reviews question whether the value matches the cost during periods of staffing strain.
