In being the primary caregiver to a parent struck with Alzheimer's many times you are faced with the questions of what do I do next. As one day they are the same as they were for the many years in the past and then they are the person they are nothing in comparison to the parent you know or even recognize. Frequent falls, lack of cognitive skills, inability to follow conversations, lethargic, lack of appetite, and even outburst coupled with anger. The person in your care is unable to follow simple instructions and a severe fall risk to themselves as well as to you. Whether it is something you want or had felt would be a consideration in your plan for their care. Recently that became the journey for our family. After frequent falls and inability to connect with a parent after years of facing an Alzheimer's diagnosis of a parent. Following a series of falls it was recommended by medical professionals to seek permanent care for their care as well as ours. The search began and an incorrect choice was made in a memory care facility as we found the residents were found sitting around in a zombie state. After realizing our choice was not the best choice we once again began the journey to seek a better location. In our search we found South Pointe of Huntsville, Alabama. Upon immediate contact a tour was scheduled with the facility was as different as day and night, we were ready to sign contracts following the first visit. The residents were happy, joking with staff, and happy to meet us. The staff were happy to reveal every location within the facility as if nothing was to be secret to us or our family member. Immediately we new that our family member would feel at home among the facility. Within days of locating them our family member had taken another fall and was in the hospital. During this time staff members came to visit our family member at the hospital! During the rehabilitation time they continued to visit our family member! As we awaited them to complete the time in physical therapy, we began moving in the furniture and creating a home environment for our family member. During this time the staff assisted us in moving their new home into their new room! Upon their arrival it was as if they had entered into a party especially for them. Their hair was groomed, nails were polished, diet needs were met, special interest were met, and games were played. Conversations with our family member turned to "I'm not a patient here, I live here!" Other residents welcomed them with open arms and new friends were formed. In our absence the staff kept us informed of the activities and the status of our family member. Our friends are now wanting to move their family members to this location. South Pointe is the best kept secret in Huntsville, Alabama. If star scales could go higher than a five, South Pointe would definitely be ranked into the tens without any doubt.

I have lived at this community for a year now, and I love being here. I've grown to enjoy the fellowship of the other residents. Honestly, I consider them to be a part of my extended family. The staff are also absolutely fantastic. They treat me as one of their own family members. Tabitha, the ED, is a sweetheart and is always ready and eager to help me with anything I need. The RAs (the "worker bees") are kind, thoughtful helpful, and supportive. Kristy, the activities director, is compassionate and always so upbeat. She is always looking for things to do that will both entertain and uplift. We laugh a lot. Last but not least, all of the managers are aware of our daily routines, and they are attentive to any changes made to those routines.
