Update: it's been 3 years since my dad passed away, and my brother, mother and I still talk about Kemper with fondness. I’m not sure I can write this without tears. When my dad first needed care, the facility we chose wasn’t the right fit, and we watched him decline quickly—spending his days alone in front of the TV. He even became confused about what was real and what was on the screen. Kemper Memory Care has been a completely different experience. From day one, Dad was brought into community, interacting with others, and we saw an immediate improvement. He’s happier, more engaged, and whenever I ask how he’s treated, he says, “They take care of me” or “They treat me well.” The staff know how to handle the challenges of memory decline with so much skill, compassion, and dignity. My brother and I say it often: Kemper has truly been a Godsend for our family.

I truly wanted to have a positive experience with Kemper House in Strongsville, especially because my great grandmother was a resident there years ago. Unfortunately, our family's experience left us heartbroken and confused. My grandmother, who is living with Alzheimer's disease, was banned from the facility after an incident in which she became frightened and left the building—an event that occurred under their supervision. She was going a few times a week for "day care". While we understand the challenges of caring for dementia patients, what was most difficult was the lack of communication and compassion following the incident. We, her family, were not given a full explanation of what occurred, nor were we offered the opportunity to work together on a solution. Given that my grandmother could not recall many details, we were left feeling shut out and disappointed. She has since said she “hated it there,” which is painful to hear from someone who has trouble expressing such strong feelings. We had hoped for a care environment that prioritized safety, understanding, and empathy—not just for the residents, but for the families who love them. I share this review in the hope that future families are given more transparency and kindness during these difficult times. Every dementia patient deserves dignity and a team that works with their loved ones, not against them. We ended up finding a wonderful memory care facility nearby, where she is now a resident and loving it!

I have been visiting the elderly in home since I was 15 years old. In the 28 years and three states since I have never ever seen a place as wonderful as Kemper House. My great uncle is there now. The staff is fabulous, when people are around to see, and not. Excellence in staffing is the rule there not the exception. All the little touches that humanize the experience and treat each person's loved one with the dignity and care they deserve make all the difference. It is the only place I have seen that I would feel comfortable recommending.
