Mountain View Care Center

In June of 2024, my wife’s care had become too much for me to handle by myself. She has a progressive neurological condition called Spinocerebellar Ataxia. This condition has left her non-verbal, non-ambulatory and requires complete care. The day I admitted her to Mountainview was one of the most difficult of my life. The staff was very friendly and helped me move her in. Because she is non-verbal, it is difficult for her to communicate her needs. The first several months were difficult. We had issues with her body positioning in her chair and the timely changing of her briefs. I would arrive many days to find her slumped in her chair and soaking wet. To address these issues I was put in touch with the Director of Nursing. After each incident, the issues were promptly addressed. She was moved to a different wing to better accommodate her needs. The wound nurse, I believe her name is Debbie, was instrumental in this move. She was placed in a private room. Although we faced some of the same issues on this wing, her care started to improve. Her nurses and CNAs started developing a relationship with her and attempting to understand her needs. The CNAs and nurses who left the greatest impression with their personalized care were Tamara, Connie, Abe, Eva, Becca, Tim, Matthew, and Carissa. There are many more that were also influential. To help the staff, I supplied them with a list of instructions that outlined her care routine. I learned over time that it is best to post the most important points of her care next to her bed. I learned to communicate her needs with the staff as well as management. I was with Colleen at the facility for 5-8 hours every day. This time spent at the facility, along with developing relationships with the staff, was vital to maximizing her quality of care. Over the fifteen months Colleen was at Mountain View, I experienced a range of emotions regarding her care. Although my focus was on Colleen’s care, I also learned what immense responsibility and lofty expectations are placed on the staff by family members. There have been issues with her care during her stay. I believe these issues stemmed from the specialized care that Colleen requires and maybe a little bit outside of the scope of their expereince. With that said, one thing I believe to be true is that nearly everyone who was involved in Colleen’s care did so with love and compassion. I am happy that I have been able to bring Colleen home. I am very grateful to everyone at Mountain View who has cared for her, allowing me to recuperate so I can care for Colleen during the final stage of her life.
