Using the Finger Interlocking Test To Check for Dementia The finger interlocking test is a simple, non-invasive screening tool used to assess cognitive function, often as a preliminary check for dementia. It involves demonstrating and asking a person to imitate basic hand movements, like interlocking fingers or placing hands flat. This test can help families notice early cognitive changes in a calm, comfortable setting by evaluating praxis (motor planning and execution), attention, visual-spatial processing, and short-term memory, as it requires individuals to mimic hand positions shown to them. While not a diagnostic tool, the finger interlocking test can help identify potential concerns to discuss with a healthcare professional. If someone struggles with the test, accompanied by symptoms such as memory loss or confusion, it’s essential to consult a doctor for a comprehensive evaluation and accurate diagnosis. Early support for memory issues, such as an early diagnosis of dementia, allows access to resources that improve quality of life. Memory care communities offer personalized care, engaging activities, and professional support in a secure environment. Acting early helps families make informed decisions and ensures loved ones thrive. Read our full blog to learn more about supporting loved ones with memory issues.

Why Seniors in Assisted Living Should Try Dance Therapy for Fitness & Fun Staying active is important for everyone, and for seniors, dance therapy can be a fun and rewarding way to keep moving. It’s a great way for residents in assisted living to stay fit, improve mental health, and connect with others. Dance therapy offers a range of physical benefits. It helps seniors improve mobility, balance, and strength, which can reduce the risk of falls. Regular dancing also provides cardiovascular benefits, making it a great way to stay healthy while having fun. It also supports mental well-being. The rhythmic movements of dance help reduce stress and anxiety, and the endorphins released during sessions help boost mood. For many seniors, dance provides an outlet for creative expression and emotional release. Another big plus is the opportunity for social interaction. Group dance sessions foster friendships and create a sense of community. Dancing together helps reduce feelings of isolation and allows residents to connect with others in a meaningful way. Safety is key to making dance therapy accessible. Choosing the right type of dance, confirming the environment is safe, and providing proper footwear can help prevent injuries. Having support from caregivers or professional instructors also makes the experience more enjoyable. Dance therapy is an excellent way to stay fit and have fun while enjoying new or familiar moves.
