I placed my friend with cancer there because he had to leave Northwestern Hospital after being there as long as the insurance would pay. I also accepted Journey Care to assist with his care, having no clue that staff at South Shore would do a TOTAL ABOUT FACE with me, but more importantly him. I’m just now able to post this info. I sooo wish I had read reviews before placing him there. The food wasn’t fit for a dog, asked for a face towel to wash him up, took them a while to FIND ONE. Seriously! Staff was quite nasty with me for no reason I could understand. Then it dawned on me later, that they didn’t want other help on their turf, journey care, which wasn’t all that either. My friend went there on a Monday, when I got there he was on the floor, fighting to get a sheet off his head. NO HELP WAS THERE AT ALL. He was very weak & ill having cancer & all. He was transported there from NWM hospital, a ten to a zero care. He died approximately 48 hours later. Got go now. Crying because of him & them. His last 48 were miserable. Lord have mercy for anyone there or going there.😔

I am deeply disturbed by the ongoing mistreatment and neglect my aunt is experiencing at South Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chicago. For over six months, I have been trying to get answers and advocate for her well-being, yet every concern is met with defensiveness, blame, or outright dismissal by the facility’s leadership — including Administrator Janet Amarillo, Director of Nursing Janet, Business Office Manager Bernard Lausingco, and Social Worker Deasia. My aunt, a vulnerable resident, has repeatedly shared with our family that she is being mistreated and denied basic care. She is sick, isolated, and has had to go without necessary items for her health and comfort, including cigarettes, despite requesting them well in advance. When she became ill — likely from nicotine withdrawal — the staff gave her Tylenol and then locked themselves in the nursing office, leaving untrained aides to deal with her. Her resident rights are being blatantly violated. The social worker took her money to buy a phone and disappeared for six weeks without follow-up. A money order sent by the business office to help resolve the issue has never arrived, and no one can provide tracking or accountability. We are kept in the dark about how her finances are being handled. Worse, when we call to advocate on her behalf, we are treated as the problem. Our calls are ignored, and our requests to speak with a regional supervisor or someone higher up the chain have been stonewalled. Even threats to report to the ombudsman are met with silence. This is not just poor management — it’s a dangerous and unethical environment for elderly, vulnerable residents. I fear for my aunt’s safety and quality of life every single day. I urge the ownership of this facility to take immediate action before more harm is done. Families deserve transparency. Residents deserve dignity.
