Beautiful, BUT… As the saying goes, “You can’t tell a book by its cover.” The Cottages is set up beautifully, the courtyard, the “cottages”, the concept, etc. However, That is where the beauty ends. I was there every day for a few weeks while a family member was a resident, so I have first hand knowledge. The caregiving was mixed. One caregiver in particular, Allie, stood out as loving, caring, and more than capable. We were always comfortable when Allie was working. Caregivers work 12 hour shifts, often without getting relief to take a break or to eat. There were very limited activities for the residents. Activities mostly centered around sitting in the main gathering room watching the TV. Activities and mental stimulation are important parts of memory care. The meals were another disappointment. The presentation and flavor was fair, at best. The residents were given one option. If that option was not to their liking, the substitute was lunch meat between 2 slices of white bread, with no sides. Overall, the general feeling is that The Cottages is cutting every corner and pinching every penny possible. I would NOT recommend placing a loved one at The Cottages. I find it interesting that one of the 5 star reviews was written by the executive director of The Cottages of Tucson.
