We are so grateful for everything about The Gardens at Barry Road. The place is very beautiful and extremely clean. Our loved one was treated so wonderfully. The staff was so pleasant and they went out of their way to make our loved one feel special. He was dreading moving into assisted living but then didn't want to leave when he had to move on to a long term care facility. I would highly recommend The Gardens at Barry Road. We feel blessed that they had an opening when we needed it. They are AMAZING!

Senior Eye Health: How Can You Care for Your Vision? Schedule Regular Eye Exams As a senior, you typically need an eye exam every 1 to 2 years, even if you don't have vision issues. Your provider will perform several tests for common age-related eye conditions to diagnose them early, even before you notice a problem. This gives you the best chance of treating the disease and reducing how much it impacts your vision. Regular eye exams allow your ophthalmologist to track changes in your eyes and diagnose age-related diseases early while they're easily treatable. However, you may need to have more frequent eye exams, depending on your eye health and risk factors. Work with your ophthalmologist to determine an appropriate schedule for you.

Kidney Health for Older Adults: A Brief Guide Functions of the Kidneys Many people don't realize how much work their kidneys do day in and day out. In addition to producing urine, kidneys have the following functions: Filtering the blood. Each kidney contains filtering units known as nephrons. These units remove excess fluid and waste products from the blood. Maintaining healthy bones. Your kidneys contribute to your bone health in two important ways. First, they convert the inactive form of vitamin D to an active form of vitamin D (calcitriol). Vitamin D makes it easier to absorb calcium, one of the most important minerals in the human body. Second, your kidneys regulate the amount of calcium and phosphorus in your bloodstream. Producing red blood cells. The kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO), which prompts the bone marrow to manufacture new red blood cells. People with reduced kidney function often develop anemia because they don't produce enough EPO. Regulating blood pressure. When it comes to regulating blood pressure, your heart and blood vessels get much of the attention. What many people don't know is that the kidneys also play an important role in preventing hypertension. If your kidneys don't receive enough blood flow, they release a hormone called aldosterone. This hormone tells your body to retain more fluid and sodium.
