The Sterling Aventura

The Sterling Aventura is NOT as appears. Please don't place your family members in this facility unless they're fully independent, as another reviewer also said. Our experience was horrible. We fell for the whole marketing scheme in the beginning. They really pay close attention to every detail to get you in the door. Very responsive...AT FIRST. My mom moved into the Assisted Living section of The Sterling at end of May and unfortunately only stayed for a month and a half until she was KICKED OUT by the management staff and exec director. My mom is highly functional with some memory issues. She is 87 yrs old and was, at time of moving in, starting radiation for lung cancer. She also developed a blood clot on her leg during this time. Due to her heavy meds for blood clot and side effects of radiation, she became confused and disoriented at night. Add to all of this, the fact that she was in a brand new environment. She made mistake of stepping out of her apartment during the night and was a bit disoriented. Management informed us this had been happening on more than one occasion, yet we were never informed of it until the last minute when they insisted she move to the memory care section because she was she had become a danger to herself and others. We were told there was no staff on that floor equipped to handle her. They insisted my sister take her to emergency to test for a UTI...hospital ran a thousand tests on her and found nothing. The cause of confusion and disorientation could have been caused by her meds. The Sterling management and director, could have cared less. They refused to take her back unless it was in memory care. My mom is not at that stage yet and the cost is a lot more. My mom is very social and loves to be busy and active during the day. Memory care was not an option for us. The fact that they did not even give her a chance to come back at a later date, when she was better, was very cruel. We asked SEVERAL times to view the video footage of my mom wandering out at night. The director, Kristen Landahl, as well as other in management, was unresponsive to our multiple phone calls, messages, texts and emails. AT last after a week, Kristin Landahl told us she got approval from corporate to show us the video footage. We had already decided this was not the place for my mom, but wanted to view the footage to explain to her doctor what her demeanor was like, as this had never happened before and has not happened since. WE informed Kristin Landahl we would be there on Saturday to move my mom's things and to view the videos. As we drove there, the director Kristin, told us she reviewed the videos herself and did not see my mom on any of them, therefore she must have used a different elevator...and there was nothing to see!! We still requested to see the video as we were skeptical now more than before. When we got to facility to view and speak with Kristin Landahl, SURPRISE, she was not there. We were not shown footage. We emailed the director again and asked if we could be shown the video footage from the camera above my mom's apartment, at least. We were then told that that camera was non operating! This is a major issue to be reported! We were never informed that camera was non-operating. This is misleading as if it is not working it is therefore, not securing the residents! Makes us wonder if any of the cameras work at all now. Especially since they are so reluctant in showing us recordings. They were either lying about all or they did NOT want us to see what was really on those videos. The head managers and director, Kristin, at this facility are careless, irresponsible, unresponsive, and cruel. All about the money here. There were many other issues which we were already questioning...at one time a nurse called my sister to tell her my mom's xrays came out fine and she was ok....when she asked what happened she was told my mom had fallen, but it was a different resident! They also got meds wrong. Very traumatic and upsetting experience at the Sterling for us all! STAY AWAY!

Awful never put your parents or grandparents here. In one of the many instances of neglect, my grandfather was left unattended while half asleep in an armless chair and fell off resulting in his fall and endless hospital visits, worsening his dementia. We have surveillance of nurses yelling at my grandparents while they are confused, being rough with them and even making fun of them.

My mother spent the last six months of her life at The Sterling Aventura ALF, and I truly regret choosing this place for her. From the very beginning, I witnessed a steady decline in her health and emotional state. She was never happy there, and she did not receive the care, attention, or love that had been promised to us. On several nights, through the camera in her room, I witnessed staff members yelling at my mother simply because they did not understand her when she spoke Spanish. No elderly person—especially one in a vulnerable state—should ever be treated in such a disrespectful and insensitive way. Thankfully, I was able to move her to a smaller facility for the last month of her life. There, she finally received the compassion and personalized care she had been missing—though sadly, it came too late, as her condition had already deteriorated too much. At The Sterling, the only person I can genuinely praise is Daniel Dhanaram, Director of Resident Services. He showed consistent kindness and attention toward my mother and made a real difference in her day-to-day life. For that, I will always be thankful. Only go here if you are fully independent. Some of the staff are rude and should not be working in a caregiving field. The building is pretty and clean, but residents need much more than appearance—they need genuine care and empathy. Unfortunately, my experience dealing with Anthony Ferro, who handles billing and administrative matters, was extremely frustrating. I was owed a refund since March, and despite countless emails, phone calls, and messages, I rarely received any response. When I finally got a check, the amount was unclear and seemingly incorrect. Since then, I’ve tried repeatedly to contact Mr. Ferro, but I’m constantly told he’s unavailable. The lack of professionalism and accountability is unacceptable—especially in a place that claims to care for vulnerable seniors and their families. I share this review not out of anger, but in the hope that it will help other families make more informed decisions during an already difficult time. The Sterling Aventura may look impressive from the outside, but my family’s experience was one of sadness, disappointment, and deep regret.
