Questions About Staffing and Care

Start with the people, because people are what matter most. Ask: What is the staff-to-resident ratio during the day? What about overnight? What training do care staff receive, and how often? Is there always a nurse on site, or only on call? What is the staff turnover rate? (High turnover is often a red flag for work culture and care consistency.) How does the community handle a resident whose care needs increase over time?

Questions About Daily Life

The day-to-day experience matters enormously for wellbeing. Ask: What does a typical daily schedule look like? How many meals are served, and can dietary needs be accommodated? Pay attention to what you see, not just what you're told. Are residents and staff interacting warmly? Do residents seem engaged, or are many isolated in their rooms? Is the dining room clean and lively at mealtime? Does the space smell clean? Do staff greet you and residents by name? Trust your gut — how a place feels is data too.
